About grades

What are artistic swimming grades?

Artistic Swimming Grades serve as structured milestones that mark a swimmer's progressive development and achievement in the sport. Governed by Swim England, this grading system provides a rewarding way for swimmers to track their personal progress, celebrate their hard work, and qualify for exciting competitive team events.

These grades allow athletes to build their confidence and develop at their own pace. There are three types of grades to achieve.

Figure Grades 1โ€“6

These assessments evaluate foundational underwater positions and technical movements, such as vertical alignments, splits, and rotations. As swimmers progress from Grade 1 through Grade 6, the technical difficulty and precision required steadily increase.

Routine Grades 1โ€“5

This pathway focuses on choreography and performance in time with music. These grades assess a swimmer's transition speed, synchronisation, artistic presentation, and the seamless execution of technical skills within a routine.
